Ms. April Armstrong is a licensed school social worker with the Exceptional Children & Health Services Division of Memphis City Schools. Ms. Armstrong also maintains a master licensure with the Tennessee State Dept. of Health. She attends Jackson State University where she is pursuing a doctrine in clinical social work research. Her research interests include implementing and examining the effectiveness of teen pregnancies and teen parents in school based programs, how it impacts local communities, and intervention programs developed for special populations. Ms. Armstrong has also presented at Mississippi Welfare Conference on African American Families and social work burnout.
Ms. Armstrong holds an A.A. in education from Southwest Tennessee Community College, a B.S. in Education from the Crichton Christian College, a M.S. degree in Clinical Social Work from the University Of Tennessee College Of Social Work Knoxville. Before beginning employment with Memphis City schools as a school social worker, Ms. Armstrong worked as a case manager with Memphis City Schools/Family First Teen Parenting Program for over eight years where she provided teenage mothers wraparound services, information groups to ensure graduation, and secondary advancement. She was employed with the State of Tennessee’s Department of Children’s Services for four years working in preventive services and severe physical and sexual abuse. Ms. Armstrong has three years of combined clinical and community practice experience in the home health field. She was employed with Functional Independence Home Care Inc. as a social service manager where she ensured services for patients and their families along with grief counseling. As social service manager she also served as a facilitator for the University of Tennessee College of Social Work master level social work intern program.
Ms. Armstrong is a native Memphian, who is devoted to her community. Her particular interest in the community is providing services to populations who do not typically seek out or have access to services due to socioeconomic factors. She is an advisory board member with Senior Companion Program at MIFA and helps with food drives for the Memphis Food Bank. Ms. Armstrong has volunteered at the Exchange Club of Memphis as a counselor and co-facilitator of Rollercoaster.
